Reading CC Cyclo-cross race, Wessex League round 4

Reading CC promoted its annual cyclo-cross race at Prospect Park on
Sunday. On a very hilly and tough course, Adrian Lansley of
Pedalon.co.uk took the win in the senior race. With good weather and an
accessible course, the promotion was highly successful.

Stephen Bale was the event organiser: "It was the first time I've
organised this event and it was a little fraught at times but we had
perfect conditions weather-wise and together we delivered an excellent
event. My thanks go to all those marshals and helpers who turned out on
Sunday to enable the cyclo-cross race to happen. Many thanks also to all
those who took part and made the race possible. Dry conditions meant a
faster race this year for the competitors and a much more pleasant
experience for all concerned. All races started on time and the high
speeds on a dramatic course meant great viewing for the spectators.
Overall a great day's racing and Reading CC are looking forward to next
year for another successful promotion."

Gavin Spiers was Reading's highest-placed finisher in 20th: "In today's
race I had a gridded position and a good start which meant I went into
the first section in the top 15. This was great as it meant I could get
a clear run at most of the sections and was able to ride the trickier
parts of the course. Everything was going ok until about halfway through
when I began to run out of energy and started to lose places. Sections I
used to be able to ride i was now having to run and even the flat
sections seemed super tough. I finished the race in 27th place, very
tired. Thanks go to Steve and his team of helpers for a brilliant day.
It was a very well run event and a great course."

Steve Millward, 21st Veteran: "My improved placing was down to better
tactics. Two weeks ago I had planned to not go too hard on the first
lap and then try and pick up some places however this was a bad move as
the race quickly became strung out and it was difficult to move up the
field. This time I rode harder on the first lap and established a
better placing from the start. There were a couple of fast downhill
sections with adverse cambers which allowed technique to be improved as
the race progressed, whereas the uphills just became harder. Not too
many mishaps apart from losing my chain twice and failing to unclip my
shoe when attempting a high speed dismount, which must have looked
quite amusing."

Rob King, 26th senior: "This was my first Cyclo Cross race and I loved
it!"

The prizes and support were kindly donated by A W Cycles, and the event
supported and encouraged by Reading Borough Council and the staff of
Prospect Park.
