Bill Higson Memorial Cyclo-Cross Prospect Park, Reading Sunday 16 th October 2016

By sauliusv - Posted on 03 October 2016

Bill Higson was a well-liked and enthusiastic member of Reading Wheelers Cycling Club.
The Son of Wheelers chairman Stan Higson (who led the club through to 1974 when it amalgamated to become Reading Cycling Club), Bill was a good all-rounder with success on both road and track including wins in the Presidents 50 (1960 & '61).

He always enjoyed the club cyclocross, called a 'scramble' in those days, and usually ended up in the pond at Burgfield Common, complete with bike, for a post-race 'dip'!

Bill was tragically killed in a road accident in 1965.

Alan Jacob (a well-known 'Independent' rider in the 1960s) gave the club a trophy, which became the 'Bill Higson Memorial Cup' to be awarded to the winner of the Club's annual Cyclo-Cross. The first winner being Dave Wren in 1966.

It’s a short walk/cycle through the park to the race HQ. It will be signposted.

It is hoped the podium ceremonies will be about 10-15 minutes after the end of each race. Minor prizes will be dealt with once results confirmed.

We are using chip timing so will aim to announce a provisional result as soon as possible. A firm result will be posted within a few days once any queries have been resolved.

Prospect Park offers a host of natural features that we have put together to create three interesting and challenging courses.

Drinks and cakes/snacks will be provided by members of the Thames Valley Ladies Circle, raising money for the Stroke Association.

Please remember that Prospect Park is a public open space. Reading Cycling Club takes no responsibility for loss or damage to items or property left unattended.

We have had issues with bikes being stolen in the past (thankfully recovered). Do not be afraid to use a lock if you will be leaving bikes unattended.

Reading Cycling Club would like to thank AW Cycles for their continued support with this event.

We are grateful for the support of Reading Borough Council in making Prospect Park available to us.

Changing rooms & showers available. Please note, in accordance with Reading Borough Council's Child Protection Policy under 16s are prohibited from using the shower facilities as there will be shared use with the senior football calendar on the day.

Cyclo-cross is off-road bicycle racing. The action is fast and furious and is great to watch as well as take part in. The course the riders follow will be marked out on the day and uses the wood and open space to the north side of the Mansion House down to the Tilehurst Road.

The under 12s race for 10-15 minutes, youths (12-16 years old) for half an hour, and juniors, seniors, and women for anything up to an hour.

During this time we invite you to come and watch and find out more about the sport, but also request that any dogs are kept under control. Marshals will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and course marking will be removed as soon as the event is over.
